A Word About Nomenclature

Thanks to a wonderful post at Bull City Rising, I have been getting unprecedented traffic this morning. With traffic, comes suggestions. Many suggestions.
It will take time to implement them all.
But hey, keep them coming. This is our city and I want this website to be the best it can be.

One visitor, Ben, let me know that:

“Listserv” is a patented electronic mail list app and probably none of these lists actually use it.

I have since changed every instance of “listserv” to “electronic mailing list.” It’s not nearly as punchy, but words matter.

Thanks Ben!

While Ben is technically correct, listserv is becoming and accepted generic term much like kleenex has. But we don’t want you getting into any trademark issues! BTW, I happen to run a real listserv (from L-Soft) with 2,500 subscribers. Best darn software I have ever used!

    Thanks for hosting this site!

    John, awesome!
Since (I think) this website is the first of its kind, I also want to be a good example for communities who will (I hope) emulate this map. Certainly, I want to stay out of trouble, but I also want to respect L-Soft’s brand.

    Thanks for your comment!

Aside from the trademark issues surrounding LISTSERV™, it can also be a confusing term for the less computer savvy. I prefer “email list” for its brevity and clarity.
